It was revealed that on Sunday 26th at 3.30pm, just 3 days before the event started, that the Big Green Gathering festival in Somerset, had been cancelled. Company directors told on their website that their license had to be surrendered:
Dear Friends, following threatened injunction proceedings in High Court by Mendip District Council supported by Somerset & Avon Police and having taken extensive advice from a prominent QC and other eminent lawyers, the directors of the Big Green Gathering have been left with no other option than to voluntarily surrender the license for the Big Green Gathering 2009. The event will now not take place and the directors’ advice and request is that no one intending to attend the event should attempt to do so, as the site is now closed and they are likely to be turned away by Somerset Police. It is our intention to avoid any form of confrontation or public disorder in regard to this and it is our earnest hope that all those involved will follow this advice. It is with great sadness that we have been forced into this position and we express our profound apologies to all those concerned.
Security issues had arisen before hand, and serious discussion will be had with the Mendip Council. However, on the 16th of July Big Green Gathering organisers were given the go ahead for the festival to go on.
It’s unlikely that ticket holders will get their £125 ticket refunded, however there are still talks to organise refunds for all 20,000 festival attendees. See Big green gathering ticket refund page for more info.
After 25 years of the worlds largest green festival, it’s sad to see it come to an end. However, there is still hope for Big Green Gathering to attend the 2010 season.
