i got some baby newzeland praying mantis, and in my incompitance, bought a small box of little crickets, which i had found out that they are to big for the 10mmx1mm mantids to catch, then i found out that they eat the little tiny fruitflies and i was like . and then i thought: fruitflies are about the same size as ants, so i went outside and just picked up an and (trying not to cripple it) and put it into my little delivery pot (because the containers ive got are too big) and let the mantis get to work but i just gigled as it missed it and i went of to do some karate and 2 hours later i came back, the ant was still there so i picked it up and the mantis but the mantis just ran away! so i thought if i crippled the ant NOW, the mantis would get it (ants being speedy little ****s), and she still ran away, so maybe the little ant is not for the mighty mantis. but i still dont see why the mantis shouldnt eat the ant, would anybody please explain:confused:

sorry I missed this post, they say ants are poison to most insects, the mantis must know this. That is why it ran away.

alot of ants contain formic acid and aren't a good food source for most things.

get some micro crickets, they are so cheap and will feed your mantis for ages. I moved mine from the travel tray to a bigger home 20cmx20cm and now they have grown to 2nd instar. Worth spending the £3 on them
