I am in the process of mating my orchids. The male has been on the female since thursday (its now saturday) and refuses to budge! I've cought him at several occassions in the right possistion to do his thing but never actually seen him. Has anyone else had this sort of behavior? The odd thing was he jumped on within seconds lol

I am unsure about the Hymenopus, I have never attempted breeding these! However, last year I had a pair of Creobroter Elongata which I never saw actually connect. These male sat on the female for about 2-3 days.
But, the ootheca of the female did hatch. So they must have mated either when I was out, or in the night.
Cheers,
Ian

I had a pair of orchids that did that. The male was on for 4-5 days. I had planned to take him off the next day to try a different male, but I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to check on my mantids and noticed they finally copulated (or perhaps that was the 3rd or 4th time). They usually don't stay copulated long, so my guess is they are mating while you sleep.

I'm very pleased to say that they have finally copulated (well first time I seen it..) it seems that the male found it easier once his stomach was basically empty because it looks pretty twisted. This has been the 4th day, so after they have finished I think i better feed them :)
