I have an adult pair of ghost mantis for slightly more than 2 weeks now but the male does't seem to be interested in mating (what a whimp :? ) Is there anything I could do beside waiting?

I would very much doubt it would be fertile, as mine usually lay around 3-4 weeks aftyer mating. How long had they been adult before you mated them?

ian

They were both adults for only 2 weeks, yeah i'm just hoping it may be fertiled, especially when this species is notorious for laying infertile ooth even mating were withness. I will try to mate them as many times as possible before the male die. boy i need to rent more porno vcd soon :D

hi,
don't wanna waste posts so did it here. I can't get my ghosts to mate! The male doesn't notice the female what so ever. How did you get yours mated yen? (And please don't bother saying with porno films and viagra :) )
Thanks for the help.
p.s my h.membrenacea are doing this too. Any tips? Like the time of day or any thing?
Cheers, Cameron.

Hi Ibanez
Most of the time, the adult male ghost is not ready when they do not mate. What i usually did and works is give them a medium size tank (4-5 gallon), keep the place warm (30C) and humid (80%) or spray twice a day, feed them lot of food and put lot of twigs in the cage too, so plenty of place for the male to creep on!! Well this would usually happen if the male is more than 3 weeks old. The male ghost are kinda shy so do not disturb them before the courtship. All the best!
Cheers,
Yen

hi,
well, the male is over 3 weeks in to adult (maybe 4-5) but the female is just past 2 so does the female need longer? Thanks, I'll try sort this out tonite.
P.S ever tried breeding H.Membrencea.
Cheers, Cameron.

Hey Cameron,
Yeah maybe the female isn't ready for she hasn't been able to produce the "scent" to attract male. I have mated ghost female of 10-day-old before so give it another try. Mating ghost is definately easier than mating spiny flower mantis or any Hierodula species.
I have never mate Giant Asian Mantis before but i have done it on other Hierodula species like H. Parviceps. I usually mate them at evening. But make sure they are "old" (4-5 weeks) enough before putting them together as this species is pretty aggressive.
Here is a pic of my Hierodula Parviceps mating

Oh nice Yen, they are a cute species. Am yet to get some of those...
Yeah, as Yen said, at least 4-5 weeks before mating will be the best idea. However, I have success with just waiting as little as 2 wekk, but is not really reccommended.

Ian

hey,
yeah tried to get the h.membrencea to mate last night, I took I think it was sheldons advice and tried gently pushing the male onto the female. The female sat there waiting on the male while the the walk all over her as if she was a stick  stupid thing. They didn't seem to mind each other though and had no problems with them attacking each other. I've put the 2 ghosts in a medium sized tank and now just hoping for the best.
Do you recommend that I should watch them when trying to mate them? Or just to leave them together to live in the same tank, since they're *kinda* communal.
Cheers, Cameron.

Hey Cam,
Ghost are communal but not Hierodula species, the female is not hungry when you put them together so they look alright at the time.
I prefer to spend about 30 minutes to 1 hour watching the pair to mate. Once the pair connected, you can leave them alone overnight. In most cases, the male's head stay intact after mating when the female is not hungry.
