Hi,

One of my Vietnamese Stick Insects (Annam) Medauroidea extradentata has laid its first egg today. Perhaps interestingly it seems to have pulled a bramble leaf from the stem and laid a single egg on it!

Could someone please advise me on how best to care for the ova to maximise chances of successful hatching?

Regards
Tristan

Hi Tristan,
Was the egg actually stuck to the leaf? Or was it just dropped on the leaf?
I can't remember how these guys lay...some stick them to surfaces, and some will just drop them where they please.

Hi Insectchat,

No the egg was not stuck to the leaf, just dropped onto it!

Ahh okay. In that case I would just keep the egg (eggS soon!) on some moist peat, and keep them at around 25c.
This usually does the trick =]

I will do
I will have a few new members to my Phasmid Family on Friday! I have purchased Diapherodes gigantea and Sungaya inexpectata. I have also got my eye on a few more species! I think I need a bigger house.......:D

I'm getting to the same point as you! I already have large screened enclosures in the house as well as aquariums turned on their ends to house all of mine. That's pretty good for technically not being able to keey any animals in the house by order of the boss!(my wife!). She actually doesn't mind the phasmids so that's ok. Luckily, I have a nice big new animal facility being constructed now so I can continue to hatch and buy all the phasmids I want :P

Don't worry Tristain, it's only an addiction...and as far as I am aware there is no treatment

Wow sounds impressive! I don't feel so bad about claiming the spare room for my Phasmid home/office:D

Well my Diapherodes gigantea (medium nymph pair) and Sungaya inexpectata (small nymph x 3). arrived today and they are awesome. I am also awaiting delivery on Lamponius species (2 large nymphs), Peruphasma schultei (4 small nymphs), Heteropteryx dilatata (small nymph pair) and 2 Stilpnochlora couloniana which most should arrive by Tuesday! Needless to say my partner has confiscated my credit card and sent me out to pick more bramble :D

LOL! Well, I am sure you will have a lot of fun =]
Sounds good, it's always great when you get lots of insects in, I get excited even now, and I have been collecting for a few years.
You should get some photos of your new arrivals up in the photo gallery.

Every time I receive a new "box of bugs" it's more exciting than Christmas! I just love getting new additions! My addiction got a bit out of control for a single room so I convinced my wife to let me build a good size specialized facility, or if the neighbors ask, a "heated workshop" LOL

"heated workshop"

My dad built me a heated room in the garage for my bugs! It's great.
I am sure a little bit of persuading, and she will let you :D

Haha, the rule is that they're not allowed in the house and the place that they're kept is not attached to the house! She figures that in the winter, if something gets out it's going to freeze before it gets to her
This doesn't as much pertain to the Phasmids as it does the more 8 legged, no legged and many legged variety ;)

Ah okay...yea same applies here, no phasmids in the house.
I am not even allowed to cool ootheca in the fridge!
It's like a bloody concentration camp :D

Luckily my partner is not quite strict. I keep all my Phasmids in the spare room/office.

I have had some new arrivals over the past couple of days! Lamponius species (2 large nymphs), Peruphasma schultei (4 small nymphs), Heteropteryx dilatata (small nymph pair) and 2 Stilpnochlora couloniana! Pics in the relevent galleries should be up later this evening!

It's a hard life but it probably makes for good balance. If my wife were into "critters" as well our back account would probably be constantly empty and our house would look like a rainforest :)
I brought home some flightless fruit flies the other day and the culture medium smells a little funny so I promptly got the "Those aren't staying in the house!" response :P

That's funny that your husband is like that too, nice that he thinks they're interesting though! I enjoy playing on the fear of bugs that many large imposing men have. I get my kicks from seeing big guys cry and/or scream like little girls when there's a tarantula around :) Evil... Maybe, Entertaining... Definitely!
